Industries Served
Machine Tool (Metal Forming Types) Manufacturing
This industry stands to realize considerable performance gains from the use of OSVACS regarding its operational efficiency and position/force control capability. Machines in this industry routinely have actuators that slew rapidly to close machine daylight spaces and then decelerate rapidly to very accurate positions and applied forces. The OSVASC, due to its IVSGTM technology, can decelerate much faster than the traditional state of the art without the risk of actuator system cavitation. IVSGTM technology, with its independent control over each actuator port and advanced force over position control algorithms, can routinely achieve applied force resolution to 0.005%. [Top of Page]
Entertainment
Omega Servo Valve has worked with major entertainment project design companies. One of these applications involved a large platform weighing 350,000 pounds with a natural frequency of less 5 Hz. The OSVCAS was successfully used to move this platform at 24 inches per second over 75 feet of cylinder stroke. With the UMAC control system variances between the four cylinders were maintained at under 1/8 of an inch. All axes were controlled closed loop using the MACRO (Motion and Control Ring Optical) fiber optic communication system with as much as 1500 feet between nodes.
For another high-profile entertainment project involving the lifting of a large platform submerged under a lake, the OSVACS was the only product available on the market to satisfy the customers performance specifications of servo controlled flow greater than 1000 gpm at less than 300 psi pressure drop. Motion Simulation
High-performance control over large and varying hydraulic flows is essential to the success of these systems. Due to the nature in which these machines are operated, incorporation of additional control provided in a more efficient and cost effective package can significantly impact the bottom line of their end customers. Material Testing
OSV has extensive experience in this industry serving customers ranging from Tier 1 Automotive product manufacturers to research institutions. OSV's digital hydraulic test solutions offer sophisticated and flexible motion control and data acquisition. Systems are easily developed by the end user using the PMACPAnel Pro interface to the LABView programming environment. [Top of Page]
Powdered Metal, Carbide and Ceramic Compaction
OSV has gained significant experience in this industry. Each of these three industry sub-groups presently benefit from the technology behind this valve product. The Powdered Metal Manufacturing Method benefits from the valve product due to its size and cost to performance ratios as well as its inherent operational efficiency. OSVACS literally reduces the necessary valve components to less than a third of typical design practice. OSVACS is able to efficiently achieve cycle rates not possible with the present state of the art. The Carbide Manufacturing and Ceramic Manufacturing Methods benefit primarily due to the exceptional positional accuracy and superior force control that the technology of the valve system provides. The reduction in required hydraulic horsepower has been significantly reduced through the use of the valve system, therefore, the overall cost per part decreased as well. [Top of Page]
Rolling Mill Machinery & Equipment Manufacturing (Primary Metal Fabrication)
Through our traditional four-way servo valve partner Schneider Kreuznach, we have extensive experience in the rollforming industry. We have successfully achieved closed-loop gap control to ± 1 micron at band speeds of 2000 m/min. Omega Servo Valve can supply the entire digital hydraulic system including the power unit, servo cylinders and DSP multi-axis controller. [Top of Page]
Forging Presses
This industry benefits significantly from the ability to reduce post-processing operations while increasing the process control and decreasing the energy cost per part that OSV's valve product is able to provide. Rapid, efficient actuator slew rates coupled with precise force control are two immediate benefits that would turn a very rapid return on investment form the incorporation of this valve product. Hydroforming
The synchronization of the forming pressure profile to the motion of the counterhold cylinders is critical to the quality of the part as well as how intricate a part can be produced. Traditional control systems use a step function approach where a forming pressure is matched to a discrete cylinder position. This method has several disadvantages usually requiring a competent set up technician to iteratively determine the proper press configuration wasting valuable production time and producing unnecessary scrap. Also, material dimensional variations can effect final part quality due to the step type forming process. OSV's system electronically gears the forming pressure profile to the force applied by the counterhold cylinders - eliminating the product quality issues due to variability in tube blank length. Also, the system has recipe management functionality that allows the operator to quickly set up the press to produce different parts by simply pushing a few buttons on the machine HMI or wanding a bar-coded part.

Press Brakes and Shearing
This is another of the many industry applications that require a fast and efficient traverse of the actuator and then accurate positioning at the working portion of the actuator's stroke. This is application is a prime example of the perfect valve product candidate. The ability to pre-program the valve with different operational parameters that can be switched on and off, at will, is a benefit for a manufacturer that wants to reduce their setup time between short run jobs. Punch and Nibbling Presses
Through our traditional four-way servo valve partner Schneider Kreuznach, we have extensive experience in the punch and nibbling press industry. We have successfully achieved closed-loop punch actuator speeds to 1200 cycles per minute on presses to 30 tons. Omega Servo Valve can supply the entire digital hydraulic system including the power unit, servo cylinders and DSP multi-axis controller. [Top of Page]
Large Part Metal Stamping
These presses typically employ large diameter bore cylinders to generate the necessary tonnage to adequately produce the desired part. These large bore cylinders obviously require large hydraulic flows if they are moved with any degree of speed. As a result, the present state of the art is to use large, low pressure drop pre-fill valves in conjunction with very complex cartridge valve logic circuit. These arrangements are difficult to control and troubleshoot for the end customer. OSV's valve product provides much needed simplification and added control to these press operations. The positional accuracy and precise force control will enable this industry to increase product quality and the complexity of part geometry. [Top of Page]
Die-Casting
Speed, and the efficient and accurate control of it is the primary success factor for this industry as well as with its cousin, shot casting. Even the most casual observer will notice the logical advantages of a energy efficient, high-performance servo valve by merely observing the bank of accumulators typically found on the machines next to the imposingly large fixed-geometry, single spool valve. A more efficient valve means less overall energy consumed as well as reducing the hydraulic dwell time between cycles. On these machines, reduction in required pressure to produce the desired flow means less expensive machines - to build and to run. [Top of Page]
Tube Forming
The high production and high accuracy machines in this industry will benefit most form OSV's valve product. The fast return slew speed and the exceptional accurate positional accuracy and repeatability coupled with the precise force control the valve product is capable of will enhance the productivity and part quality of these machines. Glassware and CRT Manufacturing Equipment
The process involves a fast traverse to cover empty space and then very accurate and precise positional accuracy and force control. These are functions at which OSV's valve product excels. [Top of Page]
Heavy-Duty Transfer Systems
Large material handling systems whether they are moving cars on an assembly line, stacking concrete blocks or moving large cargo containers, need control over high hydraulic flows. The "on-the-fly" optimization feature would be beneficial, for example, in the cargo container handling industry. The valve can be optimized in advance for the movement of container of different weight. This will allow the system to maximize efficiency and control without the aid of a sophisticated motion controller. The efficiency and reliability of the valve product is attractive to other industries within this group as well. [Top of Page]
Metal Injection Molding
The ability to sustain a long smooth or short precise stroke in a repeatable fashion along with a very fast and efficient traverse would greatly reduce the post-processing operations and reduce the cost per part. [Top of Page]
Plastics & Rubber Industry Machinery Manufacturing
Due to the competitive pressures in this industry caused by the electromechanical power transmission industry, fluid power needs to increase its energy efficiency to remain a viable long-term alternative for the plastic manufacturing industry. Injection Molding is this group's primary candidate for the valve product. This cyclical process and the speed and efficiency in which it is performed is directly tied to the bottom for the plastic products manufacturers using this machinery. The valve product would serve as an ample replacement for traditional, single, fixed-geometry spool valves due to its efficient operation at high flows, its precise clamp force control and its tolerance for moderate contamination. Blow Molding is another fine candidate, albeit a smaller scale. Some application examples in this industry for OSVACS are mold closure and mold clamp functions. [Top of Page]
Woodworking Machinery
There are many applications within this industry that would benefit from the valve product as success is defined by the efficient production of the maximum linear board feet possible. Efficient, rapid slews with exceptional positional accuracy and motion profile control, all while operating smoothly at contamination levels that are literally orders of magnitude more tolerant than the present state of the art. Mining & Geological Exploration & Exploitation Machinery
The operations conducted in these fields ranges from low-profile excavation equipment to drilling rigs to seismic simulation vehicles often requires the accurate control of high hydraulic flows. [Top of Page]
